Attaching a Proper Closure to Your Chain

If there is a creative skill that you can always use, I’d say it’s definitely adding a proper closure to your chain, especially if one breaks on you! The best part about chain is how easy it can be made into a necklace by adding a clasp and jump ring to the ends. (Hello, layered chain look!)Β  You would start by attaching an Open Jump Ring which is a metal circle and comes in many sizes. You will also need a Lobster Claw, it’s the most popular used clasp and comes in a variety of sizes. Keep reading for easy steps to learn this technique…

Supplies you will need:

  • Open Jump Ring
  • Clasp (Lobster Claw, Toggle, etc.)
  • 2 Flat-Nose Pliers
  • Chain of your choice

Steps to Attach Closure

  1. First, you want to cut your chain to your desired length.
  2. With your jump ring and flat-nose pliers, grab the jump ring on either sides of the opening and twist the wire. Basically, one hand should rotate towards your chest and the other hand away from you. You don’t want to pull it open from left to right as that will weaken the metal. You can now attach the end link of your chain.
  3. To close the jump ring you would use the same twist motion of the wire while trying your best to leave no gap in the opening.
  4. Depending on what kind of clasp you have – sometimes they come with an open ring attached or it could be soldered – you would attach a jump ring to the clasp as well and proceed with Step 2.
